Handmade Products of Momostenango

Our organization of weavers in Momostenango has assumed the responsability of preserving the tradition of wool weaving, an action that is not only important for artisans but for the cultural heritage of Guatemala.

Currently,we have more than forty active artisans working in this group, of wich twenty-five percent are women. The organization that had almost become a credit union, now partnered with The Mayan Store and returns to its artisanal roots to support weavers and promote contemporary designs.

Products from this artisan community include rugs, throws and pillows. The production process is a labor-intense activity, that is entirely performed by hand, from the spinning of the wool, including carding, dyeing and weaving in pedal loom. The production of one rug may take up to 4 days of work of 1 artisan.

We will introduce new rug designs at the NYNOW show next January 31st through February 4th at Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York.
